THE VDGS 3RD COAST/ WHITEWATER EARLY MUSIC FESTIVAL 2018
The Viola da Gamba Society 3rd Coast joins the Whitewater Early Music Festival in a mixed-instrument workshop featuring classes for all levels from beginning to advanced: from recorders to reeds and wind band instruments (crumhorns, racketts, shawms & sackbutts), viol consorts, and voices including vendor exhibits, informal late-night playing sessions, an all-festival ending concert, and more!
In April of 2018, Music Institute of Chicago faculty Phillip Serna presented award-winning Brandeis University faculty Sarah Mead in an interactive presentation on the mechanics of consort music. Supported by a Music Institute of Chicago departmental grant, Sarah’s work focused on a 6-part Fantasia by Richard Dering and madrigal by Pietro Vinci.
THE VDGS 3RD COAST MEMORIAL DAY WORKSHOP 2016 – IN NOMINE
The VdGS Third Coast Memorial Day Workshop at the Music Institute of Chicago returned in May 2016 with ‘In Nomine,’ featuring guest faculty David Douglass and Gail Ann Schroeder. Including consort coaching and a master class, our workshop featured 2 performances: the Third Coast Viols (our faculty ensemble) performing music from Taverner to Purcell, alongside contemporary works including a premiere of the Fantasy á4 on “In Nomine” (2015) by Will Ayton. The Spirit of Gambo – a Chicago Consort of Viols performed ‘M(In)i Nomine,’ mini-concert of intimate In Nomine settings for 1-3 viols.
